How is squeezed paint like your brain?

Branching patterns are very common in nature because they can reach a large area very efficiently. Examples of branching patterns include tree branches, blood vessels, roots, lightning, river networks and even the connections in your brain. That is what we want to explore here.

Get hold of two pieces of plastic laminate, and squeeze a splodge of paint between the two sheets.

Once the pieces are peeled apart, you should end up with a pattern which looks similar to a slice of a brain! An example of such an image is shown below – what do you think?
