“I’m not a Scientist” – Giant Flower Diagram

Hello Friends,

This is a wonderful and easy activity that the children (and yourself) will enjoy! We will look at what is inside a flower and how we can make our own out of paper, cardboard and other things lying around the house.

I have labelled the flower diagram and explained the basics (petal, leaf and stem) and what each part of the flower is to fit the children’s understanding (age 2 and 4).. Well, at least get them to remember what each part of the flower was called, even though they ended up calling it a TREE at the end! Other than that, this activity really helped them which their cutting and sticking skills.

So, get your tape and scissors ready to create a master piece!

You will need:

  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • Marker pen
  • Tissue paper
  • Tape/double sided tape
  • White tack
  • Graph paper or 2 newspaper taped together
  • Newspaper
  • Plastic bag
  • Coloured paper
  • Card board

 

 

 Step 1 – Fold and Cut

Get your coloured paper then fold it in half, get your marker and draw half a petal shape on one side of the paper, cut out a few with different colours.

I used different shades of oranges and yellows.

Step 2 – Let the kids take the lead

Give the children a go at cutting their own petals using safety scissors, this will increase their cutting skills.

Once they’re done, stick the petals on the graph paper using tape or double sided tape.

Step 3 – Cutting the leaves

You can use the same method that you used to cut the petals on the carrier bag but it’s best if an adult does this bit as this can get a little fiddly. I have used a carrier bag to show that you can use any around the house but you can also used green paper or even newspaper.

Stick the leaves on the bottom of the graph paper.

Step 4 – Zigzag tissue paper (optional)

As we are making a daffodil we have made the corona (the bit in the middle of the flower) using tissue paper.

Fold the tissue paper on one side then flip the paper over and fold again then repeat. When you’re done cut the tissue paper diagonally on one side then stick this on top of the petals.

Step 5 – Making pollen

Roughly cut up the newspaper in strips and roll them up by using the palm of your hands, the children love to do this bit!

Tape the straws on the petals then add the newspaper on top of the straws.

Step 6 – Roll up, roll up!

Roll up your cardboard sheets nice and tight and stick double sided tape to hold it together.

Place that cardboard rolls under the petals along with the leaves.

We have used cardboard for the stem to show that you can use different materials around the house, but you can use paper and roll them up instead.

Step 7 – Labelling everything

Label each parts of the flower, do however many is suitable for the child’s understanding.

I have labelled the petals, leaf and stem for the children to understand the basics.

Petal = attracts inserts such as bees with the smell of the flower to pollinate.

Leaf = makes it’s food from sunlight (photosynthesis)

Stem = holds the petals, leaves and other parts of the flower upright and carries the water to them.

Step 8 – Cut it in half

I have cut a daffodil in half to show the children what the inside actually looks like and I have given them their own flower to smell and touch to have a better understanding.
