About us…

Science Made Simple is an award-winning STEM outreach company with a track record of inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers and being a bridge between researchers and the public. The company’s specialised science communication services reach 60,000 people a year in schools, festivals, and learning outside the classroom, providing public engagement experiences which help to break down barriers between formal learning and day-to-day living. Our aim is to bring science and engineering to all people, regardless of background.

SMS has an impressive track record of helping researchers communicate their work at an appropriate level to a variety of audiences through provision of one-day events to full public engagement programmes for universities, NGOs, and learned societies.

We take pride in appointing only the most talented and passionate presenters who have a love of science and engineering and the skills to communicate that enthusiasm to a variety of audiences. We believe in investing in the training of our presenters so we would expect you to be open to new training opportunities to build your presenting skills within this position. We strongly value the input all our team have in the development of the business as we continue to grow and provide regular opportunities for staff to have a say in how we can improve what we do. Following a 3-month probationary period we can offer access to a contributory pension scheme and a staff profit-share scheme.

About the job….

We are looking to appoint new members to our presenter team to start as soon as possible from January 2019. The new people will be based at our head office in Cardiff but will work across Wales and the UK.

This position will require you to learn and present a range of our existing shows (for primary school, secondary school and family audiences) and deliver them at various venues across the UK. This will include a fair amount of travelling on a day-to-day basis and around 6-8 weeks a year (in total – not all at once!), staying away from home. A full clean driving licence and driving confidence are essential as you’ll be driving our vans. Whilst on tour your accommodation and subsistence expenses are covered (within our terms and conditions). When you are not touring and presenting you will be helping to develop and grow the business by building successful relationships with our clients and supporting the marketing team. You will also be actively involved in the creative process of developing new shows and other projects as they arise.

Due to the nature of the job an enhanced DBS check is required. In order to be involved in our international work you will need a full passport.

About you…….

  • Do you love engineering and science?
  • Do you have a passion and a skill for presenting this to others?
  • Do you love being on the road?
  • Is the average desk bound 9-5 job not for you?
  • Do you want to build your reputation and profile in science communication?

If so this job may be perfect for you, and we would love to welcome you to our team!

As with many small businesses you will need to turn your hand to a variety of tasks. This position will give you a great opportunity to learn more about all aspects of running a small business as well as to hone your skills in STEM engagement. Aside from being an excellent presenter you will need to be someone with a passion for working with schools and for travel in Wales, the UK, and internationally.

Science Made Simple is an equal opportunities employer; we welcome applications from all sections of the community. We shortlist applications without using personal details to mitigate against unconscious bias.
