Engineering Project: The Knowledge

Here at science made simple, we are constantly working to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

We absolutely love working on exciting and novel projects, which allow us to take science and engineering to new audiences, and we are always looking for new opportunities and innovative ways to do just that.

The Knowledge by Lewis Dartnell

What is “The Knowledge”

“The Knowledge. How to rebuild the world from scratch” is a popular science book by Professor Lewis Dartnell. It focuses on how survivors would cope following a major global catastrophe. The modern world has been destroyed and the lucky survivors are forced to return to fundamental principles of science and engineering to rebuild civilisation.

Through a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Award we are working with Lewis Dartnell to create an engineering workshop based on his thought provoking book.

This workshop will be designed specificaly with deaf audiences in mind and it will be delivered in deaf units and to deaf audiences at festivals across the UK in the Spring of 2018.

Designing the workshops

Designing this workshop has been a collaborative process between science made simple, a team of engineers and several consultants from the deaf community.

We have been working with 9 inspirational engineers to help us develop the engaging activities that the workshop will include. At the same time we have been speaking to teachers and deaf consultants to find out exactly what we can do to ensure that participants get the most out of the workshop.

Our aim is to create a dynamic and exciting deaf friendly workshop where participants need to be resourceful, think critically and hone their problem-solving skills as they try to find solutions to the challenges that survivors might face in a post-apocalyptic world.

The final workshop will be delivered to 6 secondary schools with deaf units, and 3 UK festivals later this year.

How can I get involved?
