Engineers, we need you!

The science made simple team are on the lookout for engineers who are willing to be role models for children aged 7-11.

superhero logoOur ‘Who Wants to be a Superhero?’ show features short clips of engineers and scientists who are working on something that gives them real life superpowers! We then use demonstrations to explain some of the concepts behind them, allowing the children to see and have a go at some of these ‘superpowers’.

The areas we are currently in need of role models for are:

Saving the planet (renewable energy)

Lasers (lasers!)

Saving lives (medical engineering)

Flight (aeronautical engineering)

Super strength (civil engineering, particularly bridges)

What do we need from you?

If you area of work/research links to any of the above, we want to hear from you!

We would love to make a very short film with you (less than 2 minutes), where you tell us what you do, maybe show us something you use to do your job, and tell us why you like doing what you do!

We’ll need 1-2 hours of your time, on a date convenient to you, and lots of enthusiasm! We will bring the filming equipment and film crew.

An example can be seen below, where Astronomer Haley Gomez explains what she does, and how it allows her to see through things (like having X-Ray vison!)

What will you get out of it?

You will get the chance to practice speaking with our expert communicators here at science made simple who will guide you through presenting on camera and support you every step of the way. You will end up with a short film all about who you are, and what you do, that you can then use to promote yourself/your area of work.

We regularly perform the ‘Who Wants to be a Superhero?’ show across Wales and the UK, to up to 200 primary children and their teachers at a time. You would be an invaluable role model to these children, showcasing your field of work as an ineresting and desirable career.

What do we hope to achieve?

We hope to reach out to children and teachers, changing perceptions and educating them about STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers and the people who do them.

We believe that by showing them real people in these proffessions, we can help to dispel any negative stereotypyes, and inspire children to consider career choices they may not have previously considered.

Can you help?

If you think you may like to be a role model for students, and are happy to explain a little bit of what you do on camera, then please get in touch! We are happy to discuss the project in more detail, and answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to hearing from you!
