Pint of Science Festival, Cardiff 15th – 17th May 2017

Do you have a passion for science?  And a passion for pints?  How do you fancy combining the two? Grab yourself a pint and join world leading researchers from Cardiff University!

The UK’s largest science festival, Pint of Science, is coming to Wales for the very first time.  On 15th-17th May Cardiff will bring some of the best Cardiff University scientists to some of the best local pubs. O’Neills, 10 Feet Tall, Old Market Tavern, and Little Man Coffee Co. will each host talks by scientists on the 15th – 17th May.

Check out the range of talks here. Grab your tickets and head down to your local pub to hear talks on everything from medical researchers developing new therapies, to climate scientists trying to save the planet.

Alongside the main talks each evening will also include a range of fun, science-related activities including live experiments, fun quizzes, geeky puzzles, engaging stories and other interactive activities.

What is Pint of Science?

Pint of Science was established five years ago by a group of UK-based postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Festival founders Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin wanted to bring back the personal touch to science, giving everyone the chance to meet the real people behind the incredible research taking place in universities across the country. The duo are amazed by the growth of their idea into a global festival, which has spread to 12 countries around the world.

“Science can often get lost in translation, leading to the spread of pseudo-science and myths. The best way to overcome this is for people to be able to talk to scientists directly in a familiar environment, such as in a pub over a pint”, says Festival co-founder Dr Motskin. “The festival gives everyone the chance to pick the brains of some of the UK’s most brilliant academics, breaking down barriers and giving unrivalled access to the people behind the science.”

The first Pint of Science in Wales!

This is the first time Pint of Science has come to Wales. Emma Campbell and Alex Baker have coordinated the Cardiff event.

“Bringing the first PoS to Wales has been an entirely student-led effort, which is a testament to how proud we are of the research we do. The festival will showcase world-class research from internationally recognised scientists from Cardiff University.  We think it’s so important that the people in the area can get hands on with the science happening right here in their own city. We want to show people how our research in the university impacts them, and can help us all. Whether it is the lifesaving research from our neuroscientists and medical researchers developing new therapies, the chemists and physicists searching for new life and other world, or the climate scientists trying to save the planet! We scientists are trying to make a difference all over the world, but that starts at home in Cardiff.”
