What is the show?

SHLogo‘Who wants to be a superhero?’ is an engaging interactive science show that introduces students to six inspiring role models working in STEM[1] jobs that have some link to the superpowers of superheroes! We then use simple demonstrations and volunteers to illustrate the science behind what the real-life superheroes do. The show covers a number of areas in the KS2 curriculum including aspects of ‘Forces and Motion’, ‘Light and Sound’ and ‘Ideas and evidence in science’.


Thanks to funding from the National Science Academy we can offer this to your school for just £75+VAT. We will be allocating schools to our regional tours on a first-come first served basis.


  • Only Primary schools in Wales to apply
  • Engage fully with the CPD provided. The teacher CPD event (20 – 25 mins) must take place on the same day as the workshops.
  • Provide feedback on the impact of the project on both staff and children in the form of two online evaluation forms (on the day and 6 months after the CPD.)

The amount of shows delivered in each region is proportional to the amount of schools in that region. . Please be aware that the places are strictly limited and very popular, we advise booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We will let all schools know if they have been successful by the end of May.

What happens on the day?

We will bring everything required for the presentation and just require a hall or space big enough to present to your Key Stage 2 students, two tables and a screen to project onto. We can repeat the show up to 3 times during a day or we can see all of the students in one go. Our optimum audience size is 150. We require an hour to set up, and 30 minutes to pack away.

The CPD session will involve as many teachers as you require and be 20 – 25 mins in duration and will typically be at lunch time or after school.

Why it matters…

Research has shown[2] that if students do not consider themselves a ‘science person’ before the end of Key Stage 2 then it is incredibly hard to persuade them otherwise. We want to be able to give students a realistic view of the huge variety of jobs that use science and engineering, and the characteristics of the people who work in them so they can keep their options open.

Part of this project also aims to tackle the gender stereotypes that surround STEM careers. Girls are still hugely under-represented in science and engineering and one of the aims of this project is to address that. At least half of the role models we use in the supporting videos are female although the show is recommended for mixed audiences. We are excited to be working with the award-winning campaign; ‘Let Toys Be Toys’ to provide accompanying lesson plans for your teachers. These will help address some of the stereotypes connected with the marketing of toys, which we believe is a big influencer on how boys and girls develop interests outside of school.

In 2006, the Women and Work Commission identified the need to challenge gender stereotypes in education and ensure that children’s aspirations are not limited by traditional ideas about what girls and boys can do. Challenging gender stereotypes is likely to have widely beneficial effects in terms of improving educational and life outcomes for both genders, helping young people and adults to have respectful relationships and improving behaviour in our classrooms. Indeed, a significant body of research already exists to support this argument.

Research has demonstrated how classroom discussions about gender constructions and using literature to deconstruct stereotypes can have a significant impact on educational engagement and learning.
