Cardiff scientists donate Christmas dinner sets for Africa

Science communication team ‘science made simple’ has donated 16 school dinner sets to children in Angola after a highly successful December for the Cardiff scientists.

The Cardiff University spin-off company promised to donate a school dinner set for every show it performed in December. The total of 16 shows saw them reach more than 2,400 students during the month.

The gift, donated through World Vision, will enable school students in Angola to have a healthy meal once a day by providing them with resources and cutlery.

Director Wendy Sadler said: “We have performed several shows in Africa and have worked with schools that have very few resources. In the UK, most of us take our Christmas dinner for granted so we were keen to help a few more children in Angola enjoy healthy food every day - not just at Christmas.

“Alternative gifts that benefit someone else instead of yourself should be a big part of the festive season so I wanted 'science made simple' to get involved and support World Vision in this venture."

Among the December shows was a series of presentations by Helen Lloyd at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Didcot, Oxfordshire. They included two performances of Cartoon Science to mixed primary and secondary school audiences, and an evening public lecture, which attracted almost 200 people, mainly adults.

In a message, the organisers said: “Thank you so much for your hard work on Friday. Everyone really enjoyed the lecture and we have had great feedback with compliments on your energy and enthusiasm!!”
