Becky Tours Tokyo High Schools
Becky flew 6025 miles to take the Music to your Ears show to the students in Japan sponsored by the British Council and The Royal Institution.
Arriving on the Sunday severely jetlagged and daunted by the different pace of life in Tokyo, Becky had two days to see as much Tokyo as possible.
The highlights of her trip included a trip to the Meiji Shrine, shopping in the vibrant streets of Harajuku and the amazing assortments of food on offer. (That’s when she could understand what she was eating!)
On the Tuesday work started and Becky performed half of the show as part of a discussion event for the local science communicators.
“Science Communication is just starting to take off in Tokyo and it was really interesting to see how another country is tackling it.” said Becky.
For the rest of the week Becky toured some of the local highschools including, Tokaidai Fuzoku Takanawadai High School, Kaetu Ariake High School, and Urawa Minami High School.
All the schools were Japanese speaking and all the shows were interpreted. It was Becky’s first attempt at presenting to a completely non-English speaking audience but she thoroughly enjoyed it.
"The students were great, really receptive and enthusiastic! I was thrilled to be the first British female lecturer to take part in the scheme."
During the trip Becky was bitten by a giant mosquito causing a very dramatic bite (20cm in diameter!) and a visit to the Doctors but she is back home safe and well and getting ready to go to Hong Kong.
Thanks go to Mika, Yasuo, Huw and the Interpreters who did a brilliant job of organising the event and entertaining Becky.
Science made simple look forward to returning to Japan in the future!
