Wendy attends Woman of The Year Lunch

Our very own Wendy Sadler, award-winning South Wales businesswoman has been selected as one of  the UK’s Women of the Year.

Wendy Sadler, founder of the innovative science communication company ‘science made simple’, is among the women from around the UK and overseas, invited to attend the prestigious Women of the Year Lunch in London.

Launched in 1955, the event brings together outstanding women of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life, in recognition of their individual achievements.

Every woman invited to attend the lunch at the InterContinental Hotel, Park Lane, London, on Monday 15 October, is considered to be a ‘Woman of the Year’ in their field.

“It’s a fantastic honour to be invited to attend,” said Ms Sadler. “I understand there’s a rigorous selection process and numbers are strictly limited.”

Four awards will be announced at the lunch, judged by a panel including Joan Armatrading, Glenys Kinnock MEP, Virginia Wade, and Floella Benjamin.

Board president Joan Armatrading said: “Each and every woman who attends the Women of the Year Lunch does so because of their considerable achievements.

“It is my honour and pleasure to ensure they are recognised and celebrated through this event for their enviable contribution to society.”

Previous award winners include Baroness Thatcher, Tina Turner, Paula Radcliffe, and Dame Kelly Holmes.

Ms Sadler, aged 34, formed ‘science made simple’ as a spin-out company from Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy in 2002.

Earlier this year, she was awarded the Descartes Prize from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research - dubbed the European Union’s own Nobel Prize and regarded as the ultimate accolade for those involved in communicating science.

She followed the likes of Sir David Attenborough and Bill Bryson in receiving the Descartes Prize.

A former Welsh Woman of the Year (science and technology), Ms Sadler is also chair of WISE in Wales (Women Into Science, Engineering and Construction).

The ‘science made simple’ stage show Visualise was shortlisted for the Total Theatre Award for experimentation at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer.

‘science made simple’ uses a range of innovative methods to communicate their message that science is something everyone can enjoy.

As well as its core work of delivering spectacular and entertaining shows such as Cartoon Science and Bubbles and Balloons in schools, the team has contributed to science television programmes on ITV, BBC and Channel 4, 19 children’s books and regular radio appearances.

The company also provides consultancy to the Research Councils and  training to scientists, and has broken new ground in offering career opportunities in science communication.
