Science made simple in South Africa
Becky D and Helen are back from 10 days of science fun at Scifest Africa, Africa’s
largest science festival. Scifest Africa is held every year in Grahamstown, a small university town in South Africa. They had a great time, and were warmly welcomed by everyone they met. The festival’s theme this year was ‘science in motion’, and we performed our science of sport show every day, which also fitted in well with the World Cup Fever that had gripped the nation! As well as performing, they enjoyed meeting science communicators from all over the world, and watched some incredible shows. From learning about how to be an astronaut from a 13-year old NASA Space Camp veteran, to hearing about fractals in society from an academic, there really was something for everyone! They also found
time for a sneaky safari one afternoon, and got to stroke hand-reared lion cubs!
Over the week, Becky and Helen spoke to about 4700 people, some of them travelling overnight to get to the festival! They’re already looking forward to going back next year and revisiting old friends!
