Job vacancy at science made simple
Vacancy: STEM Communicator. Full time (fixed term contract initially for 12 months with the possibility of extension)
Salary range: £15,500 – £17,000 (depending on qualifications and experience)
science made simple is an award winning STEM communication company that specialises in the development and delivery of innovative science and engineering shows that are delivered in schools and at other events throughout the UK. Last year we delivered over 500 shows to a total audience of around 75,000 people and in the last 5 years we have worked in over 20 different countries.
We take pride in appointing talented and passionate presenters who have a love of science and engineering and the skills to communicate that enthusiasm to a variety of audiences. We also strongly believe in investing in the training of our presenters so we would expect you to be open to new training opportunities to build your presenting skills with this position.
We are looking to appoint a new member of the team to start as soon as possible after July 2011. The new person will be based at our head office in Cardiff but will work across the UK and beyond.
Your main role will be to learn and present a range of our existing shows (for primary school, secondary school and family audiences) and deliver them at various venues across the UK. This will include a fair amount of travelling and around 6-8 weeks a year (in total) staying away from home. A clean driving licence and confidence with driving is essential. Whilst on tour your accommodation and subsistence expenses are covered (within our terms and conditions). When not touring and presenting you will be helping out with a range of general tasks to help develop and grow the business. This will include a bit of everything from answering the phones, to helping to build and road test new props! It is anticipated that you will be actively involved in the creative process of developing new shows and other science communication projects as and when such they arise.
This is an ideal post for someone in the early stages of their STEM engagement career with some presenting experience already, and the desire to gain a broader range of skills for a future career in science communication or informal education. Due to the nature of the job an enhanced CRB check will be required. It is likely that the successful candidate will get involved in our international work in which case a full passport would be required.
What we would like from you:
- A degree in science or engineering or a related subject – or equivalent evidence of self-led interest in the subject areas
- Some experience of presenting science to schools or family audiences
- Good organisational and administrative and skills
- Dedication, initiative and an entrepreneurial flair
- Basic IT skills (including skills with Powerpoint, Word, Internet research etc) and familiarity with Apple Macintosh computers
- Creativity
What we can offer you:
- A friendly, creative and flexible working environment
- A team of experienced presenters to help with your training
- CPD support to help develop your career
- The opportunity to play a part in how the business develops
- Access to a contributory pension scheme after a probation period of 3 months
