Silent science show inspires Singapore

Whilst the rest of us at science made simple HQ were restocking our show kits over the summer holidays, the technoclowns of the science made simple team, Gaz and Debbie, went to Singapore, and performed a 27 show run of our arts-science spectacular, Visualise: reloaded.

It was a very busy fortnight, and the pair performed to over 9000 people in the Singapore Science Centre!

Visualise: reloaded is different to the rest of our shows in that it mixes physical theatre, live science demonstrations, music and video to show the wonder and beauty of science, and is particularly unusual in that it uses no dialogue.  As a result Visualise: reloaded is a show that crosses international borders.

Throughout the show Gaz and Debbie use everyday objects in unexpected ways.  They make plastic bags fly, make music with straws and turn toilet paper into a streaming rainbow of colour.  They create a world of wordless mystery; less explanation, more exploration. The lack of language means the show is suitable for all ages and levels, and audiences are invited to make their own observations and discoveries.

Debbie, who is the project manager for Visualise, said:  "We were delighted to bring the show to South East Asia for the first time.  Science is often presented as an endless stream of facts or answers, but that's not what really excites scientists. They love the questions; the unknowns; the puzzles and riddles. Through Visualise we want to share that sense of excitement".

The shows in Singapore add to the list of countries the show has visited.  In the past the pair carried out a 12-country tour, dazzling audiences from Austria to Azerbaijan.

The show has also appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it was shortlisted for a Total theatre award for Experimentation, and achieved sell-out status.

Talks are currently underway with the British Council in Poland with a view to them hosting Visualise: reloaded at theatres in Warsaw and Krakow. Watch this space for more details!
