Mathsapps
Produced in collaboration with Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Mathsapps shows how maths is in involved with more careers than you might think!
How can a sports scientist use a graph to help the top rugby players in the country get back to health? How can estimation help a hairdresser, or even a chef? How can maths keep you safe on an aeroplane and even help to break the land speed record?
Join us in this exciting, interactive show and find out how maths is used in all sorts of careers, some of them might just surprise you!
Learning objectives
Key stage 3
After watching the show Key stage 3 pupils should:
- Develop an understanding that estimation is a very useful tool to use in all calculations
- Be able to name some real life careers where estimation is useful.
- Be able to carry out useful estimates and understand the limitations of estimations
- Know that a graph is a very useful way to visualise numerical data
- Understand how graphs can be useful in many different careers
- Know that if you have the starting conditions of certain events you are able to use mathematical modelling to make predictions about the outcome of the event
- Know that some events are very hard to predict, but that maths help us to do this, which has great benefits in many fields, with real life examples
- Develop an understanding that maths is essential to a wide range of careers
