science made simple is a social enterprise with a passion for science and all things associated with it! We aim to share our enthusiasm by offering a selection of inspirational and educational experiences that are tailor-made for schools, festivals, adult audiences and the public.

Our mission

  • To inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers
  • To engage a wider public with STEM* as part of popular culture
  • To be a STEM* translation service between researchers and the public

*STEM = science, technology, engineering and mathematics

We do this by

  • Providing professional presenters and high quality science shows for schools and festivals
  • Using a variety of formats including live presentations and demonstrations, theatre techniques, the performing arts, and other artistic means to engage our audiences with STEM subjects
  • Developing educational materials and products about science
  • Training the science communicators of the future
  • Writing accessible science articles and books
  • Working with the media on popular science programmes

Wendy Sadler

Wendy Sadler is the Director of science made simple and she has been working professionally in science communication and public engagement since 1994. Her experience includes seven years working as an Education Manager at a leading science centre, and one year as the national schools lecturer for the Institute of Physics. In addition she has written numerous books for children and presented science on BBC and ITV Wales.

In 2008 she was announced as one of the UKRC's Women of Outstanding Achievement for her work in founding 'science made simple' and reaching a wide range of audiences with innovative science and engineering experiences. In 2006 she was announced as an EU Descartes Laureate for her innovative work in science communication and in 2005 she won the Young Professional Physicist of the Year award from the Institute of Physics. Her first degree is in Physics and Music, and she has since completed an MSc in Science Communication with a dissertation on the long-term impact of informal learning. She has a special interest in the science of music, and is passionate about shifting the stereotype of scientists and nurturing new science communication talent.

Helen Lloyd

Helen Lloyd is a science communicator for science made simple.

Her first degree is in Physics and she has also completed an MA in Musuem Studies (with distinction!). Her experience includes writing and presenting science shows for schools across the UK and Europe and developing exhibits for science centres and museums. She is particularly interested in the presentation of contemporary science research to a wider audience and she also has a passion for music and particle physics!

Becky Holmesbecky holmes

Becky Holmes is a science communicator for science made simple.

Her first degree is Physics and she went on to study a MSc in Communicating Science at Techniquest, a leading science centre. Her experience includes presenting science shows to all ages from 5 - 85, all over the UK, and internationally, most recently Tokyo and Hong Kong. Her favourite aspect of science communication is presenting and developing new shows for the younger audiences, aiming to create a better image for science within today's popular culture.

David Pricexdavidbiog_med

David Price is a science communicator for science made simple and runs our branch in the North.

David completed his undergraduate studies at Liverpool University in History and American studies. Ba(hons) 1988. After running a small business in the textiles industry David became an interactive exhibit builder for the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Whilst at the museum David's passion for science communication and joy at fostering curiosity around science subjects naturally led David to write and deliver science communication events. David then became the museums science outreach provider.

David has organised and presented numerous science events for schools, communities and families, working with organisations such as the BBC, Braniac and Ecsite UK and has been responsible for presentation skill training for other staff. These posts have given David a great deal of experience in communicating with diverse audiences. David now works for the science communication company 'science made simple' as Northwest science communicator. David is the Northwest regional conveyor for the British Interactive Group.

Huw James

Huw James is a STEM Communicator for Science Made Simple.

Huw grew up in the Sirhowy Valley just outside of Cardiff. Having finished tope4l_huw_med of his class in Geology at Tertiary College, Huw went on to the University of Glamorgan to study Astronomy and Geology. Realising his passion for Astronomy, Huw then graduated with an Honors degree in Astronomy and Space Science in 2006. Later, he joined Techniquest Science Centre as a science Communicator and Presenter before starting work at Science Made Simple in July of 2007.

Huw enjoys most sports, including basketball and football. Is keen on Surfing and Rock Climbing, and DJ's on GTFM.

He now co-ordinates the Engineering Explained project at said company, as well as being part of the Science Café in Cardiff, and a committee member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA) South Wales Branch and General Committee. Huw is also a proud Welsh Climate Advocate for the British Council

James Piercyjames_biog_picture_med

James is a science communicator for science made simple and runs our branch in the East.

James has a degree in chemistry and MSc in science communication. He has been involved in writing, producing and delivering; science shows, workshops and dialogue events for wide ranging audiences since 1995.
He has recently been awarded the LAMDA gold medal in public speaking and is Vice Chair of the British Interactive Group (BIG)
Before joining science made simple James was Director of Inspire Discovery Centre, a small hands-on science centre in Norwich, where he developed the outreach and educational programmes.
James has appeared on television numerous times to present scientific ideas and demonstrations, notably on The Investigators for Channel 4, which was nominated for a Children’s BAFTA.
Recent projects have involved the development of shows for National Museums Scotland, Butlins, and The Herschel Space Observatory.

Becky Davies

Becky Davies is a science communicator for science made simple. becky_davies_1_lge


Becky has a Bsc (Hons) Anatomical Sciences and a passion for science and its communication! She is particularly keen to learn new ways to engage people of all ages with science and wants to use her enthusiasm for science to enthuse others.  

Becky has worked for SETpoint and leading science centre, Techniquest, presenting science shows and workshops in Techniquest, and in schools and museums throughout the UK and Croatia.  Becky has also worked with different groups in the local community, facilitating discussions.  As well as presenting, Becky has developed educational and engagement materials for schools. She now enjoys using this experience to develop and present activities and shows for all ages.
