After image ... a simple experiment

Stare at the picture above for a count of ten. Then look at the white area next to it. What do you see?
What’s happening?
This is called persistence of vision. You detect darkness and brightness using cells called rods in your eyes. If you look at a bright scene, the image is "burned" onto your retina, as your rods are saturated with light. Even after the light is gone, you still see it.
