Plymouth Science Fair
For the last month Helen has been going into schools in the Plymouth Excellence Cluster and running workshops about the science of music and science communication. At the end of the workshops, each school had produced three science demonstrations to explain what they had learnt to other students. They also learned about communication skills, teamwork and coping with nerves.
The project had its grand finale at Plymouth University on the 15th March, when students showed off their work in a science show and exhibition. Students performed a hearing test on the audience, played their electronic compositions, and explained vibrations, sound waves and pitch among other things. The two winning schools, St Paul's RC Primary and St George's CE Primary, received electronic keyboards donated by Roland UK. The project was a great success. Students were rightly proud of their work and enjoyed sharing it with each other, and they all developed their communication skills as well as extending their understanding of science.
The event was also used to launch Peninsula Science, a project to involve the whole South-West community in science and breakdown barriers between scientific disciplines. More information about Peninsula Science can be found at www.peninsula-science.org.uk
